Calories in, calories out is complete nonsense. The idea of of "volumetrics" where you eat a low-calorie density meal and you will not gain weight is simply not the whole truth.

So, next time you are struggling to lose weight remember it is what you eat not how much you eat. Just stop eating meat. Calories are not a factor so you don't need to count them. No one ever gained weight from eating apples and bananas. I challenge anyone to try.
